Bat

"More or less the weakest enemy in the Catacomb games. All he does is fly around and be stupid. One shot kills this little pesky critter. The only problem with the bat, is that if he flies up behind you, it attaches to you and starts to bite and claw at you, and it is very hard to get these things off."
--Description, Catacomb Crypt

Annoying and appearing in large numbers, the Bat is an recurring foe in the Catacomb series.

They look like oversized black bats, and appear in Catacomb 3D, Catacomb Abyss, and Catacomb Armageddon.

In Catacomb 3D[edit]

A formation of Bats at the bottom of the well.

The Bat has only one Hit Point, and tends to rush directly at the player, but is fast and tends to appear in very large groups. It also does more damage than the Orcs, and as such they will attempt to swarm the player. Once they get in close, they dart quickly around the player, hoping to avoid enemy fire (since even a single uncharged shot can kill one). In groups they can be absolutely maddening, because the two areas you face them in have jagged walls that hinder your ability to maneuver. Rapid uncharged shots are the best solution for a Bat swarm. You should generally avoid using spells on them.

When killed, the bat explodes, leaving no corpse.

They appear only in The Warrens and Hidden Caverns.

In Catacomb Abyss[edit]

The Bat returns, and is exactly the same in terms of stats, first appearing in The Towne Cemetery. They tend to appear in even bigger numbers, which increases the threat they pose.

Its sprites and animations are the same as they were in Catacomb 3D.

Bats do not require a Jewel to detect on the Crystal Sphere, and show up as dark gray dots on it.

In Catacomb Armageddon[edit]

A bat approaches with other enemies in The Dark Forest.

The Bat appears with a graphic facelift, but is still, again, the same enemy and with only one hit point. The main difference is that it tends to screen for the much more dangerous Treant, which appears often in the same area and can do persistent damage even in death. It's recommended to prioritize killing the Treants first, since the bats are more of an annoyance than an actual threat and can be dispatched in a single Magick Missile. This does mean that a single Xterminator can annihilate an entire swarm of them instantly, however.

They first appear in The Dark Forest.

Compared to their Catacomb Abyss version, they have a different appearance, a brown colour, with green eyes. They still explode when killed and leave no corpse.

Bats still do not require a Jewel to detect on the Crystal Sphere, and show up as dark grey dots on it.

In Catacombs of the Damned[edit]

This homage game features very similar bat opponents.
